Not For Sale

A while back I really went for painting small, adjusting the compositions to fit my style of painting. I tried to keep it simple, letting the brush strokes do the work. I did two versions of this cupcake, sold one and decided to keep this one. This was the first of the two and I kept this one because of the experience of painting it, I really felt like I was in the zone. Not sure how many brush strokes that went in to it, but it painted itself.

I painted this one a while back when I experimented with fabrics. I had a lot of fun with it and am sure I will use fabrics again.

I did take a little different approach with this one. I did continue with expressive brush strokes, but I didn't go as bold with the colors. I tried to keep the contrast with a lighter touch, no bold shadows. I also spent more time on it. I like the result myself, the face is softer than the previous ones.

This is a variation of an earlier painting. I have had a lot of fun painting these floral paintings with reference to actual real flowers but with a lot of imagination.

I have been out of town for two days and am looking forward to start painting again. I am also looking forward to post my latest faces, but I promised myself that I should post them in the order that I made them. At first I didn't like this one, it was boring and I just let go and went bold and it improved a lot. I learned that blending bold brush strokes can be a good thing.

This is a good example of one thing leading to another, combining two ideas. I did a similar non-figurative abstract painting and I have done a lot of these kind of flowers and this is a combination of them both.

I have done a lot of experimentations with my previous faces. I thought I needed some more structure and control before I could really let go and simplify, therefor I started to get back to basics, but still keeping my style. This one is a combination of me holding back and experiment. I meant to take it further, but someone at home forbid me to take it further. I wanted to make more contrasts. I like this one, but I will never know if I could have improved it.

I looking forward to show some of the newer face explorations, but I thought I should post them in the order they are done. I think the square format did throw me on a loop with this one. I like the colors and how I worked with the brush stroke. The head has a doll-like quality, is a little round, but otherwise I like it.

I do have some small paintings to post. I did them earlier when I really enjoyed painting small. This one is the first of two versions of an apple that I did for the "January Art Challenge" 
that can be found at the "Shoot and paint blog". The paintings were inspired by the reference photo that was provided.

I went very big, detailed and full of brush strokes on the first face study I did. I went the opposite way with this one. It is still kind of big but I only hint the features of a face, keeping it very simple and playful. I only share these studies so you can see my journey.

Flower Abstraction 6

This is actually the first painting I did with this kind of flowers, and I was actually tired of failing, couldn't get the results I wanted. I did this without thinking and just went for it. It is very loose and I realized that I could do it. I just had to be open to the absence of black lines, that I didn't have to use it as much that I usually do and it would still be me.

I posted a rough face painting earlier, my first step in finding out how I want to express faces. This is my 2nd attempt and totally different than the first. I went big, very big and worked more on details, but still keeping things loose. These series of explorations are for sale if someone want to buy them, but I don't paint them for that purpose.

This is a big and a small version of the same composition and with this I wanted to see how I  changed my approach dealing with a small panel. It is no surprise that I like to work on the bigger scale, but nice to see that I can handle smaller too.

This is my 2nd non-figurative abstract painting and I had a lot of fun with this one. I liked this a lot and used it as an inspiration when I combined this kind of abstraction with a single white flower. I will show that one later.
