Iris abstraction 9

This is actually an old painting that was called "Purple Irises in the shade" and did get a lot of views when I posted it for the first time. I do/did like it, the limited color palette, but there was something that was bugging me. I am not sure if it is the fact that I have loosened up a lot since then or that I thought it lacked something that made it "pop".
Anyway, I reworked both the flowers and the background, not easy since some things are set and can't easily be changed, but I felt that I rather do something and fail than keep it as it was. Right or wrong decision, have no idea, but personally I like it more now.

This is what it looked like before I reworked it.

  1. I really like your iris paintings. I think the vibrant colors you added to the flowers brings them out more. I like the enhancements and I like the warmer tones in the background, it helps to compliment the flowers and doesn't take your eye away from them as it seems to in the original version.

    1. Thank you Tina. I never get bored with painting Iris flowers. There are too many types of flowers and ways to paint them for me to get bored. =)

Finding the balanance between control and be loose can be hard.

    1. Thanks Renate. I am exploring when I paint. Sometimes you take it too far, sometimes not enough and if everything goes right one gets it perfect.

    1. I never know what to call you, but thanks =)

I didn't think it was bad before, but I thought it could be better, felt it missed something, so I went back to it and reworked it.

  4. Roger the change is incredible! I liked the original version, but the new one I LOVE. The colors are brighter, maybe it's the contrast between the color and neutrals you've got in the background. And I agree with your sentiments exactly. :) Try and fail is better than to not try at all. Huzzah!

    1. Thanks Crystal. A few small changes can do a lot of difference, but in this case I did a lot of changes. Like you said, no point to keep things one only think is OK....

  5. Roger, Love your style and how it has evolved. Brighter colors and more warm tones in the background make the newer version more lively. Nicely done, as always!

    1. Thank you Kathleen. I do think I have grown a lot as a painter the last 18 months. I am not there yet, but I try too loose up and do "my thing".

  6. It is like two different painting with two different moods , but both are gorgeous.

  7. I like the newer version better. The background is pushed back allowing the flowers to emerge. The colors in the background are beautiful...I think much more sophisticated.

  8. The new version is much nicer--cleaner, more lively colors. It's great you went for it and took the risk-it paid off!

  9. I definitely like the second version best.
Hi Roger! Thanks for your visit. I had a great time going through your blog and looking at your irises. A wee bit of Van Gogh in there maybe. Have a good weekend. :)
